Why is there Hypo- and Hyperventilation in Competitive Freediving? Five Minute Friday.
Why and when would some of the top freedivers use hyperventilation, and when hypoventilation?
This is a follow-up to last week’s video: ua-cam.com/video/cqfDN2dc__E/v-deo.html
Please comment and send in your questions for the next Five Minute Friday!
Cheers, Oli

    The exact statement (at the end of your exposure) is never do Wim Hof breathing technique just before any kind of immersion underwear (static breath hold, Dynamic free diving, or going down underwater). WIM Hof METHOD only on land, seating position or laying down.

    Great video - and interesting take on the benefit to the muscles involved in taking deeper breaths. But to be clear, the safe answer to this question is a resounding NO. The breathwork component of the WHM rapidly expels CO2 from your system via hyperventilation. This goes against what you want to train for in freediving: connecting to the physiological need to breathe and learning how to tolerate elevated levels of CO2. This is developed over time and practise - not via hyperventilation.

    Hi Oliver, many thanks for sharing good content! I have a question for you… I just bought a pair of short blades (60cm long). They are pure carbon fins blades from Leaderfins. I have 76 kilos and I was recommended to get medium stiffness to use for recreational freediving and spearfishing. I found the blades way too hard. This is normal when the blades are shorter?

    • @OliChristenDrew
      @OliChristenDrew 5 місяців тому

      Hi Lucas, This is also my personal experience with Leaderfins. Their blades of normal length are much stiffer than expected and not tapered enough (which means stiff under the foot, thin at the tip, and the transition in between). I have never personally tried their shorties, but based on your experience, they seem to have a similar problem there as well.

    Hi, you mention the initial step as being an inhalation, however how do you do this if you already have full lungs. When resurfacing, you need to first enhale before starting the recovery breath inhalation. Do you exhale fully or partially as the initial step? Thanks

    • @OliChristenDrew
      @OliChristenDrew 11 місяців тому

      Thanks for pointing this out, I missed mentioning that, indeed. After surfacing, first comes a passive exhale! "Passive" means you open the airways and let the air flow out. This exhale will end somewhere around half-full (FRC, for those who know this term already), so it is a partial exhalation.

    I'm 172cm and 74kg... I kick C4 extra longer blade for 6 years now (M stiffness, 30 degree angle, 87cm blade total length and 19cm wide, bend starts at middle pos.)...dive around 20 meters for spearfishing.. after all these years I feel exhausted to kick my C4 s now... I was thinking to change brand first, thought cetma (edge soft fins) is good brand to upgrade fins but after I watch your video I decided to get shorter (maybe regular for you :) ) blade fin instead of another brands longer blades... İ think problem is not stiffness or brand, but length thanks for the idea mate....I save lots of time :)

    Whim Hof seems to overdo it when he teaches his method, he also says 'fill your chest', he seems to force the breathing and I'm nor surprised if some people feel lightheaded after one session. That seems to be the main problem. So yes, you might call that 'induced hyperventilation'. Hyperventilation however is usually a symptom or anxiety, running out of breath or running out of oxygen in general (e.g. high altitude). It also raises your heartbeat. I've heard free divers saying that they do deep natural unforced diaphragmatic breathing as you do in yoga, before diving not just as a training session. I think if you know what you're doing. it better activates the parasympathetic system (rest and digest) and delivers al little more oxygen to the bloodstream (if done correctly you'll never reach the point you mentioned when too much oxygen can 'starve' your brain). With a natural deep breathing technique just before you dive you can delay your diaphragmatic contractions and dive for a longer time. I've done it myself many times, only in swimming pools though. I've also discussed it with a free diver instructor. E.g. swimming 25 meters underwater and coming out without the need of breathing faster and my heartrate going from about 60 to 70. I wouldn't recommend Whim Hof though, it's too aggressive a technique and it might be dangerous if what you're doing is hyperventilating rather than relaxing your body and giving it a bit more oxygen. I know that the majority of free divers work on their CO2 tolerance, however I don't see anything wrong with a proper mild breathing technique that makes you start your diving experience very relaxed with a bit more oxygen in the bloodstream.

    Great video - all of us instructors have received this question countless times. I would like to correct one small thing you said here - as someone who has swam 40 minutes in 4.5C water in a bathing suit (an "ice mile") and also a Freediving Instructor to say "with better blood flow to the extremeties, you can also endure cold better" after hyperventilation is the same thing as saying "you can hold your breath better after hyperventilation". It may FEEL more comfortable in the beginning but as an ice swimmer I can tell you that we do not want to hyperventilate prior to a cold water swim for obvious reasons - many of which you explained so well in this video. As you hyperventilate you may feel as if you can hold your breath longer and you may feel as if you can withstand cold water longer but it simply isn't true. The proper breathing prior to a cold swim or even an ice swim (less than 5C) is the same relaxed breathing we teach in freediving. I don't believe the Wim Hoff method has a place in cold water at all - not for freediving and not for swimming.

    Hi Oli and many thanks for taking the time to do these tutorials and sharing them, it’s really great! I have a practical question - not sure if I’m doing something wrong or not, or if it's just a question of finding the right length for the cycles - when i’m working on the full-breath cycles, after 3 to 5 cycles or so, I’m starting to feel something slightly similar to diaphragmatic contractions on the inhale, well not really contracting but more like palpitations First few cycles are fine, then as time goes on it’s as if after the full exhalation my diaphragm was palpitating as the inhale starts, ie as if breathing in against the resistance created by pursed lips generates a tension by not allowing the diaphragm to pull back to neutral position at the speed it would like after the full exhale... Exhalation is always fine, after one full breath I relax and let it flow out gently against tongue resistance no muscle movement until reaching the neutral position, then I engage the muscles to push the diaphragm and complete the exhale. But then on inhale it feels as if I’m controlling the rate of inhalation by inhaling through pursed lips is a little too much for my diaphragm - ie if left alone the diaphragm would pull quicker to reach neutral position, and really doesn’t like the resistance, starts palpitating… I do get a vague feeling of air starvation until reaching the neutral phase at this point on the inhale. Thinking it was length, I'd started with 30 second inhales and 30 second exhales, and tried dropping down to 25 seconds for both this morning but still getting the same feeling on inhale. Exhale is alway perfectly fine and relaxed and pleasant in both cases. I am doing something wrong in the technique, or should I just shorten the cycles even more until I don’t get this feeling of the diaphragm pulling unhappily on inhale? I’m doing the exercise lying down btw. Thanks in advance for your pointers! cheers! ben

    • @OliChristenDrew

      Hi Ray, it sounds to me you are doing it right. And it sounds you get high on CO2 and hence get contractions. Maybe start with 45s for a full cycle so that it is really comfortable for 5 cycles, for a few days. Only then start to increase the time, maybe to 50s for a few days, and so on.

    I was taught a different method, exhale a little inhale little more than the exhale no pressure just a hold and repeat 3 times then exhale more and inhale a little with a pauze breathe hold no pressure so that at the end of 3 repetitions your at neutral lungs then a good breath in through the nose and gentley out through the mouth to neutral lungs... I'm OK.

    Hi, Oli. My question is regarding instructor pool requirement. Could you please elaborate on the significance of the pool requirement for all disciplines for an instructor course? To me, it made sense if there is a requirement to demonstrate good technique, but why the required distance and time? Because I have never seen an instructor demonstrating a 4-4:30 static and a 100m DYN to students when they are teaching. And also, the prerequisite for an instructor course is to have done all the levels, which included pool requirements up to master level, shouldn’t that be adequate? I understand the need for the depth requirement, because as an instructor, amongst other things, they need to be able to dive down with the student to monitor them, and also act as a safety, because it is physically demanding. So I’m really curious about the pool requirement, looking forward to hear your thoughts.

    • @OliChristenDrew
      @OliChristenDrew 3 роки тому

      Thanks for your excellent question, which could be a topic for a Five Minute Friday in its own right. In short, there are two main reasons for instructor performance requirements combined with the demonstration of great technique: The "the big 4" (4 laps in the pool (100m), 4min static and 40m depth) do not ask for a competition level freediving training to improve one's performance, but demonstrate that a freediver has reasonably mastered all skills of recreational freediving, which is in turn a requirement to teach these skills, both in pool and open water. Secondly, being a proficient freediver enhances the safety margin not only during open water sessions, but also in a confined water or pool session. Having a mature technique (demonstrated by means of the performance requirements) enable a freedive instructor to intervene also in an unforeseen and potentially stressful rescue situation. Note that there are also further skills to be covered during instructor training which aim at the same enhancement of safety margin, such as the CO2 dive.

    I understand how breath counting CO2 tables can be easier to standardize than time-based ones, but you still have to control the speed of the full breath cycle, don’t you? It’s not the same to do a slow breath cycle than a faster one... how do you manage this?

    • @OliChristenDrew
      @OliChristenDrew 3 роки тому

      Technically you don’t need to control the speed of the full breath cycle, it is a more or less fixed amount of air. However, in reality it is so that if you do the full breath cycle too fast, the amount of moved air will decrease. So the best speed for the full breath cycle in a table is the fastest one where you can still access your maximum vital capacity.
